Ever since my espresso machine has been out of commission (aka I threw it away because it broke), I’ve been fantasizing about coffee gifts from family and trying to find ways to get caffeinated at home without breaking the bank (because going to instagram worthy coffee shops every day would be way too expensive). For a while I was buying cold brew concentrate from Trader Joe’s and that was doing the trick, it was just getting pricy. That’s when Coffee.org reached out and sent me some Miss Ellie’s coffee to try out. At first I had thought of getting a french press, but I decided, why not try making a cold brew at home since it wouldn’t require any additional equipment? I’ve made this recipe twice and I have to say, it’s way better than Trader Joe’s Cold Brew at getting me hyped up for the day (and way better than Stok Coffee which is absolute TRASH). Cold Brew Coffee Recipe (yield: ~3 cups)
- 4 cups filtered water
- 1 cup course ground coffee beans
Mix coffee beans & filtered water in a container. If using a Coffee Sock, pour water over coffee. If straining/filtering after brewing, mix with a spoon. Refrigerate for at least 12 hours and remove coffee grounds. To serve, dilute with water or milk. Enjoy warm or cold!
It’s all about the grind- Cold Brew is supposed to be done with course ground coffee. I’ve never ground coffee before in my life, so I grabbed my roommate’s Magic Bullet and went to town. And after checking out Rancilio Silvia review, I decided to buy one, I’ve been looking to get an espresso machine. Some near-whole beans stuck around because I overfilled it, naturally, but it didn’t make much difference. The first time I made cold brew I used fine-ground coffee and it definitely didn’t turn out the same.
The Coffee Sock has kind of changed the game for me compared to the first time I made cold brew. The reusable cotton coffee filter makes it so easy to squeeze out excess water once you’re done brewing. I got mine on amazon but their site has different size options that I didn’t realize were a thing. Mine is the 1/2 gallon size and my mason jar is a 2 quart jar. My batch only fills it about a third of the way once finished, but I may consider making bigger batches once I figure out how long my cold brew lasts.
The Coffee Sock has a metal loop which you use to secure the grounds in the filter to brew overnight. I didn’t think it would stay but it really helps. I thought using the filter during brewing would make the brew weaker, but I think it worked out just fine and definitely makes clean up so much easier.
Now you’re ready to brew your own- just add milk or water to your strength preference. This is a very concentrated cold brew so I’d recommend diluting it at least a little bit. I like mine like an iced latte, and it tastes more like an iced latte than an iced coffee because that’s how strong the cold brew is!
Let me know if you guys try this at home- it’s so easy, anyone could do it…and the results are worth it!
