I was really excited to be attending LuckyFABB for the 2nd time last weekend! It was held in the same hotel (SLS) as last year, but one major difference was that Lucky Magazine has a new editor in chief: the fabulous Eva Chen! This time last year she had recently left her post as Teen Vogue’s beauty editor, and was a speaker at LuckyFABB 2013!
9:00 AM: Eva Chen welcomed over 400 fashion and beauty bloggers to LuckyFABB 2014! The room was buzzing with excitement (and the croissants for breakfast helped).
9:15 AM: The first panel of the day, Next Level Tech, began. It featured Raman Kia of Conde Nast, Stephanie Mark from The Coveteur, and Hilary Peterson at Lyst. Raman Kia spoke at last year’s LuckyFABB as well! This panel covered all kinds of platforms, such as apps or social media, that are up and coming for bloggers.
10:00 AM: Eva Chen sat down with Nasty Gal’s founder & CEO Sophia Amoruso to discuss her new book. She gives some great tips on entrepreneurship, and it was great hearing her story about Nasty Gal’s beginnings. I will definitely be picking up her book, #GirlBoss, when it comes out next month!
11:30 AM: Right before lunch, Eva Chen sat down with Nicole Richie, Creative Director of House of Harlow 1960 to discuss her business and history in fashion. It was full of random quirky tidbits. I bet you didn’t know that Nicole’s daughter picked her lavender hairstyle! Also, she’s gardening (with a Chanel fanny pack, obvi) and about to get chickens. This definitely isn’t the Nicole Richie you remember from The Simple Life!
1:15 PM: After lunch, we broke out into session that we selected. I chose my first session to be P&G Beauty’s Insta #IRL Beauty School featuring their brands and a live demo from celebrity makeup artist Kirin Bhatty. This was a cool class because it used some of our fave instagram filters and related them with makeup. Think of the contouring and brightening effects that these filters create on your face. We also got some new products to play with so look out for some reviews!
2:15 PM: The 2nd class I chose was Grow Your Traffic, which I also picked last year. This session gave tips on how to make your blog show up higher on Google searches. I always find cool websites to use with this panel, but I did already know a lot of this info.
3:15 PM: I was really excited to see YouTube featured in LuckyFABB this year. Ingrid Nilsen spoke on How To Take The Best Videos. Her channel, missglamorazzi, has amassed over 2 million subscribers in the past 4 years. I’ve been watching her for at least 3 years and first met her in 2009. She’s a super sweet girl! She gave great tips on the best settings and lenses to get. I have had my eye on a lens that she mentioned for a while now, I just want to upgrade my computer first! If you’re wondering what she uses to film: Soft Box lights (with natural light as well), Canon Rebel T3i, and Sigma 30mm f 1.4 lens. She uses Final Cut Pro X to edit her videos (which she does all by herself!). I plan on using her tips once I upgrade to a Macbook (hoping to within 6 months!). If you are looking to get into the YouTube world, definitely invest in a good camera like the Canon Rebel’s- I have a T4i and love it!
4:45 PM: To conclude the day, the final discussion was with Supermodel Coco Rocha. I enjoyed hearing her speak because she isn’t what I’d expect from a typical model. She’s well rounded, funny, and real. I loved hearing about how she hates selfies. She says if you have the guts to take a picture of yourself out in public, why not just ask a stranger you’ll never see again? Very true…but the main reason I don’t ask strangers to take photos is because I’m scared they’ll steal my phone! I’m a wuss.
Also in day 1 we got to meet with quite a few brands such as L’OCCITANE, Poshmark, Pressed Juicery, SimpleHuman, The Brave Collection, Caravelle, Miss Me, and Wendy’s. I didn’t take too many photos inside because it was a madhouse in there because everyone was trying to get their freebies! The next day we came back for a really fun networking brunch (with more croissants) and just had a relaxing time. I then went to the SLS Hotel’s Ciel Spa to get a honey facial…a relaxing day to end the weekend!
If you read my post last year, I’m sure you saw how major that gift bag was. This year’s gift bag, albeit smaller, was still amazing. I am having a blast trying everything out and spending the gift cards that brands provided! I’ll definitely keep coming to LuckyFABB, it’s such a fun experience to meet new blogger friends and hear the newest innovations for bloggers on how to improve!
