Kristin Ess Scalp Collection Review & Demo | Video

I’m super excited to share the new Kristin Ess Scalp Collection with you guys! The new line extension, available at Target, consists of 5 products targeting scalp health and retail for only $12-14 each! I was sent the full collection, so, naturally I had to do a first impressions video. Watch the video for my full review, or keep reading to see my cliff’s notes!

Kristin Ess Scalp Detoxifying Bubble Hair Mask: This mask is like the “carbonated” masks you may have tried on your face, but for your scalp! It’s meant to be used as a pre-shampoo treatment on dry hair to remove oil, product build up, etc. This feels so cooling and tingling, plus, it’s super fun to use!

Kristin Ess Instant Exfoliating Scalp Scrub: The scrub has small and larger size granules that really help you get in deep in that scalp and physically exfoliate any excess sebum! Plus, it’s cute n sparkly. It’s not too abrasive, washes out easily, and the sparkles are gone without a trace. This is gentle enough to use weekly!

Kristin Ess Scalp Purifying Micellar Shampoo: Micellar water isn’t only for your face! I was surprised with how much of a rich later this shampoo gives (and without sulfates!).  This shampoo is meant to wash away impurities while leaving your natural moisture intact. It doesn’t make your hair feel baby smooth, because that’s not it’s job! It’s a clarifying shampoo that doesn’t strip your hair to straw. I’d say you could use this once a week and be fine, but I’d probably use it biweekly or monthly, depending on how gross I feel like my hair/scalp are getting!

Kristin Ess Weightless Hydration Daily Scalp + Hair Mask: When Kristin says this mask is weightless, it truly is. I was surprised at how it didn’t make my hair air dry greasy (even when using it in my roots), and the whipped, airy texture makes it feel super luxe to apply. Plus, that coconut scent…to die for. This mask is both for scalp and hair and can be used daily to calm and rebalance the scalp and smooth damaged cuticles.

Kristin Ess Anytime Anywhere Scalp + Hair Milk Oil: This product was the most shocking to me because I automatically assumed I hate it. I hate oils in my hair because they always cause me to be a grease fest. This bi-phase milk oi hydrates and protects to restore moisture on the scalp and in hair. I used a few droppers in wet hair and let my hair air dry, but you can also use it in dry hair. Be especially cautious in dry hair, as a little goes a long way! I did have an oopsie where I put too much on the top half of my hair, but you can fix that with a quick spritz of your fave dry shampoo.

My Hair Routine + Fave Hair Products

If you’ve followed along the past few years, you know I’m not a “hair girl.” I didn’t get my hair dyed until I was 20 (and that was by a celebrity hairstylist for a blog post, casually!), didn’t start blow drying my hair until recently, and used to think all shampoos are basically the same. I didn’t even use conditioner because I have oily hair!

Now I’m pleased to inform you that I have educated myself slightly…I’m still super low maintenance for the most part, but I’ve found a wash & dry routine that I really like. And I’m even more low maintenance style-wise…which you’ll soon see!

The shampoo & conditioner I’ve been using is the Redken Frizz Dismiss line. Besides oily hair, frizziness is my other hair issue. I’ve gone through two bottles of each of these and as I type this, I’m currently out and have to try something new. But, I would repurchase these for sure if I didn’t always just have something new to test. I like this duo because I can still wash my hair every other day (or every 3 days) with the aide of dry shampoo. More on that later.

When I was sent this amazing BioIonic GoldPro Blowdryer, I didn’t realize it would change my life. I’m a night shower type of girl so I’d almost always sleep with wet hair. Which, apparently doesn’t help with the frizz. At first I was using the blow dryer alone because I’m kind of scared of products (oily hair problems). Now I use one, which I’ll get to later, but here’s my blow dry method…I just blow it and pause to brush every once in a while. I know, I’m terrible. But I just started blow drying, so how am I supposed to give myself a drybar-esque blowout? I think having a more expensive blowdryer definitely helps.

I typically use a Wet Brush or a comb I bought from Eternally in Amber. But, I’m sure there are plenty of better options as I feel like my hair is so tangly still & the brush isn’t helping. My hair, you see, she’s very thick…(same). But, I feel so pretty using that pink comb. Sue me.

The next Redken product to save my life is the Pillow Proof Blow Dry Primer & Heat Protection Cream. I put a pump of this in wet hair (mostly ends, residual on the crown so I don’t get too greasy!), blow dry, and the extra puff of frizz and flyaways that lives on the top of my head disappear. I had never used it until recently when I was cleaning out my piles of plastic bins of products & realized I could use it now, since I actually blow dry my hair…revolutionary.

Then, since this usually happens at night, I’m off to sleep on my Slip Silk Pillowcase that I reviewed earlier this year. It actually helps!

The next morning I’ll style my hair. I use a BioIonic GoldPro Styling Iron to straighten my hair. Blowdrying usually gets my hair mostly straight, so I usually just need it for my bendy ends. I love the look of curls, but I just don’t have the patience to do them at home 99% of the time, despite always wanting that textured beachy waves look. I add some texture to make my hair a little less perfect. Texture spray is the one product that I’ve found for styling that I like across the board. My absolute favorite (and also the most affordable) is the Kristin Ess Working Texture Spray. It’s the best…adds the slightest amount of texture + hold to roughen up my straight hair and add volume at the crown. I’ve also tried the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray & OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray but KE honestly takes the cake.

To maintain my style slash keep my hair from looking greasy after a day, dry shampoo is a godsend. I was fresh out of my favorite dry shampoos, so they’re missing from photos. But, my favorites are batiste or Kristin Ess. You can get both at Target. The batiste is cheaper, but the scents can be a little overwhelming and one-note. KE’s is a much more higher end type of smell. And yes high end products smell better. They just do. I think it’s because they use actual multi-note fragrances…which I think is great because the scent really lingers in your hair. If you like clear dry shampoos you’ll hate these, but I can’t see why people would want a clear dry shampoo because they don’t do squat. The white-spraying dry shampoos actually work to absorb oil. I like to use them at night and not brush it out, so it can absorb and I can brush it out in the morning. You have to be wary of build up, though.
