I thought it would be fun to decorate some of my own pumpkins for this fall season, and although I missed Halloween, these are perfect up until Thanksgiving! I think decorating pumpkins without having to carve them is a lot easier, safer for kids, and makes the pumpkins live longer.
I chose some miniature cream colored pumpkins for 99 cents each from the grocery store- and then these spare pinecones from another project I’ve yet to share, from Michael’s craft store.
For the materials, you’ll need:
- Glitter of your choice (mine was gold & a large size)
- Masking Tape
- Sponge Brushes
- Mini Paintbrush
- Martha Stewart Gold Gilding Fluid (The same one from my DIY Gold Agate Coasters)
- Mod Podge (I used glossy)
You can get all of these materials at your local craft store!
Let’s start off easy- to make your pumpkin gold, simply paint the entire surface with the gilding fluid. I like this method because it dries faster than paint so you can turn it upside down to get the bottom with a minimal waiting time!
For our gold glitter pumpkin, I painted the stem gold and then taped off where I wanted the glitter to be, so there would be a nice clean line.
Then, paint on a thick layer of Mod Podge with your sponge brush to the area you taped off. Don’t let this dry!
Immediately shake on plenty of glitter to cover up all of the glue. Make sure there are no empty spots!
You can shake off the excess glitter and funnel it back into the container. Now let this dry for a little bit.
Then, paint on another thick layer of Mod Podge over the glitter to seal it & prevent any glitter mess, and give it a glossy finish. I let it dry a bit and then removed the tape before it was completely dry. Because it’s a thick later it takes a few hours to dry. And then, you’re done!
They’re definitely cute enough for an instagram. My roommate interns at Jouer Cosmetics, so she brought my pumpkins in for a little photoshoot…I’m totally reposting the picture because it’s cuter than anything I could have taken! 😉
